DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
This painting is based on the dark night of the soul, something many of us will experience in our lives. The dark night of the soul can be experienced after a traumatic event in your life or a period of suffering. You start to reflect and travel inward. To the outside world, you may seem to have it all but something is missing and your soul is screaming at you. I describe it as ‘the in-between’, you are shedding the old version of yourself and transforming into your new self. You are not quite there yet though and it is frustrating for your soul, stuck in the in-between. This painting reflects this – the soul is being suspended from all sides and held in place, through the darkness of your soul, there is an opening and through it lies space, stars and possibility but for now your soul is stuck. Fascinatingly enough the origins of ‘Dark night of the soul’, can be traced back to St. John of the Cross, a Spanish poet, catholic saint and spiritual writer from the 16th century. In his poem, ‘La noche oscura del alma’, he describes how if the soul is to pass to great things, then this dark night of contemplation should first of all destroy it, bringing it into darkness and emptiness, for the light it shall receive, will be a divine light of the highest kind.
